Discipline of Management
For the Public Good
The Management Discipline at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics seeks to have a positive impact on business, society and policy through its teaching, research, engagement and internationalisation activities. In terms of focus areas, the Management Discipline is recognised nationally and internationally as contributing to business & society, entrepreneurship & innovation, human resource management & decent work, international business & strategy, and responsible & sustainable management. Focused on transformative and global impact in our research and teaching, we emphasise how the various aspects of management address the following United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals:
- Good health and well-being
- Decent work and economic growth
- Industry, innovation and infrastructure
- Peace, justice and strong institutions
We also recognise that addressing grand challenges and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals requires not just new ideas and novel solutions, but keen insights in the various areas of management to deliver lasting and transformative change and make a positive impact on business, society and policy.
Teaching
We are dedicated educators that seek to enable students to be highly skilled, engaged and civically minded graduates to make positive contributions to business and society. The student learning experience focuses on creating a vibrant and engaging environment, using high-quality pedagogy. To promote research-led teaching, we incorporate research-based insights into our curriculum content. Discipline members have won several teaching awards.
We make an important contribution to our undergraduate, postgraduate and executive programmes. The following programmes represent the core of our teaching activities:
- Bachelor of Commerce
- Masters in Human Resource Management
- Masters in International Management
- Masters in Management and Sustainability
- Masters of Business Administration (MBA)
Our post-graduate programmes are award winning, and the Masters in Human Resource Management is accredited by Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) at the advanced level and aligned with the standards of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
Research
We engage in research for the public good. With an explicit link to grand challenges, the cross-cutting themes in our research focus on tackling some of the biggest management problems facing business, society and policymakers. We develop research impact through our publications in leading journals, external engagement and links with relevant practitioners and policymakers to affect positive change.
Members of the Discipline have published their research in numerous leading, international peer-reviewed journals, including the British Journal of Management, Human Relations, Journal of Business Ethics, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of World Business, Organization Studies and Strategic Management Journal, among others.
The Centre for Entrepreneurial Growth and Scaling (CEGS) is led by colleagues from the Discipline. Discipline members currently hold editorial posts in a variety of highly-ranked academic journals, serve in leadership roles in internationally leading academic associations and have won a number or research awards.
Engagement
Our faculty are well-connected to all types of organisations, including new ventures, SMEs, scaling businesses and multinational corporations, as well as policymakers and public sector enterprises. There is a mix of organisations with commercial, social and hybrid missions.
Our engagement with external partners fosters collaborative relationships to create value and impact in our region, nationally and internationally. The multitude of projects and collaborations with our partners across teaching and research are evidence of the trust and support we enjoy from practitioners, managers and policy-makers. Student awards on our Masters programmes are sponsored by The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Medtronic and Nelipak Healthcare. We maintain strong alumni connections with our graduates.
Internationalisation
Our faculty are globally engaged and embrace internationalisation in all activities. We work to provide a globally diverse and culturally rich learning and working experience in our School. Our Discipline does this through promoting cultural diversity in the classroom and creating global mobility opportunities for our students, such as student exchanges and international study trips.
We build relationships and partnerships with international universities and partners and hold strong positions in international networks. Many of our research collaborations are with international partners.
